An emerging biotechnology, medical and environmental sciences industry cluster is beginning to gather steam in Canada’s Technology Triangle. With significant investment into this ‘life sciences’ sector in recent years, the establishment of new research institutes around medical and biological innovation technologies, and applications of biomaterials in industry, Canada’s Technology Triangle is well-positioned to foster the growth of this exciting knowledge sector. The dynamic cluster of environmental and biotechnology business has grown to more than 140 companies and 150 research institutes. Major health sciences, biotechnology and environmental enterprises include 3L Filters, Agfa Healthcare, Agribiotics , ARISE Technologies, Conestoga Rovers, DALSA , Hydromantis, Grand Valley Fortifiers, Hybrid Turkeys, Imaging & Sensing Technlogy, KaVo Canada, Lakes Environmental Software, Medicalis, Northern Digital Inc. (NDI), Novocol, PCB Containment Technology, Roche, Shaver Poultry, Photowatt, Unitron Hearing, and Virtek Vision.
UW’s School of Pharmacy, centerpiece of the new Health Sciences Campus in Downtown Kitchener, will be the second such institution to open in Canada in over the past 60 years, and only the second school of its kind in Ontario. The School of Pharmacy will focus on the integration of education, research, and clinical care, emphasizing the role of the pharmacist as a key member of the primary health care team.
Grand River Hospital is a 495 bed comprehensive community hospital that provides patient-centered care to more than 450,000 residents in the Region of Waterloo and the surrounding communities. 2500 professional staff and 800 volunteers will ensure that Grand River Hospital's proud tradition of meeting the health care needs of this community will continue into the future.
In 2001, Jim and Heidi Balsillie graciously donated $5 million to the One Voice One Vision campaign. This fundraising campaign raised over $44 million for local hospitals for major redevelopment projects, including the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre. In honour of their tremendous generosity, the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre building was named “The Balsillie Family Building”, and opened its doors in October 2003. The Balsillie Family Building, an Integrated Cancer Program of the Grand River Hospital, is a full service and comprehensive cancer treatment and research centre.
