    Pandemic Preparedness: Strategies and Tools

  • The last 3 influenza pandemics, in 1918, 1957 and 1968, killed approximately 40 million, 2 million and one million people worldwide, respectively(1). It seems that on average pandemics causing high morbidity and mortality have occurred every 25 years during the last century. Most experts agree that the next pandemic is overdue. If a new pandemic were to occur, between 2 million and 7.4 million people, worldwide, could die including 11,000 to 58,000 Canadian (2). And, 4.5 to 10.6 million Canadians could become ill (3).

Influenza outbreaks occur regularly every year. Recent outbreaks of avian influenza and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) have highlighted the need to use mathematical modeling, statistical estimation, computing and simulation, to determine whether they could reach severe epidemic proportions and eventually develop into pandemics. These models of the interactions between infectious agents and their hosts, disease spread, prediction systems, and response strategies, will be useful to policymakers, public health workers, and other researchers who want to develop better understanding of the dynamics of pandemic in order to enhance the pandemic preparedness and response plan.

In this symposium, some of these methods and tools for developing the best intervention strategies will be discussed. It will be a forum for interaction among healthcare providers, emergency planners, policy makers and academics. Through this interaction, we believe that a common understanding can be developed, as to how mathematical modeling, statistical estimation, computing and simulation tools can be used to develop the best intervention strategies for responding to a pandemic.

Protecting our environment continues to be a major issue relevant to everyone and every business. Heating up the discussion is the impact of climate change. While these topics are broad, there are some very real implications for organizations in Waterloo Region today, particularly in three areas: environmental penalties, new air quality standards in Ontario and recent measures to address climate change.

This presentation will cover the current status and rules under the legislation pertaining to Environmental Penalties. The legislation authorizes the Ministry of the Environment to impose penalties directly, without recourse to charges and the Courts. We will discuss how environmental penalties may result in new liability exposures and change compliance management practices.

The presentation will also cover the introduction of new standards to protect air quality in Ontario, as well as governmental and non-governmental measures to address climate change.

The seminar speakers will be Gabrielle Kramer and Rick Coburn, lawyers from the Toronto office of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP. Gabrielle is a litigation lawyer focusing on issues related to the environment, municipal law, expropriations law, regulatory defence and real estate. She has worked on projects including the Toyota development in Woodstock and the TTC Sheppard subway system extension. Rick practices environmental law and appears regularly before the Ontario Municipal Board on a range of land use planning matters. He also advises on municipal assessment and taxation matters.

Over the next decade Asia -- especially China -- and Eastern Europe will account for about 70% of the growth in the global automotive industry. - Margaret Cornish will provide an update on the Chinese auto industry and insight into the domestic players. Margaret was a highly-regarded auto analyst with Scotia Capital and recently completed a four-year term as Executive Director of the Canada China Business Council. She was also a member Linamar's board of directors.

    - Steve Rodgers will address the continuing strategic and operational challenges facing North American parts makers. 14-Sep-06 - 14-Sep-06
Free Breakfast Seminar Time: Continental Breakfast available: 7:30 a.m. Presentation: 8:00-9:00 a.m. Who Should Attend: Managers, Directors and Prospective Directors of Not-for-Profit or Charitable Organizations Are you on the board of a not-for-profit or charitable organization, or considering it? Do you know that as a director of such an organization you have specific legal duties, and can be sued if you fail to take proper steps to fulfill your duties? Are you a manager of a not-for-profit or charitable organization and would like to learn how to better protect your directors, make them more comfortable in their roles and more effectively manage related governance issues? Borden Ladner Gervais LLP will be hosting a free breakfast seminar to help existing or prospective directors of charities and not-for-profit organizations better understand the nature and scope of their legal obligations, and the proper steps that should be taken to fulfill them. Related good governance practices will also be discussed. Among other important issues, the seminar will address the following questions: 1. How does Sarbanes-Oxley type legislation apply to not-for-profits and charities? 2. What do you do when a conflict of interest arises? 3. Why do professionals/experts on boards have a higher duty than others? 4. How can directors be protected against personal claims for unpaid wages of employees? 5. What is a "legal audit" and how often should it be completed? This seminar is a must for managers of not-for-profit or charitable organizations and existing or prospective board members. Unravelling the Mystery of Government Contracting - A Government Procurement Seminar
    27-Jun-06 - 27-Jun-06
Canadian governments spend almost $100 billion a year on everything from pens to aircraft. Companies wanting a portion of that business need to maximize their opportunities and know what to do when things go wrong. For example, recent initiatives contained in the Federal Accountability Act could further increase the risks associated with supplying the federal government with goods and services. The seminar will be presented by Gerry Stobo and Vincent DeRose, two experienced federal government procurement litigators from the Ottawa office of BLG. This seminar is a must for companies doing, or wanting to do business with the Federal Government of Canada. Those who should attend include: CEO's, Senior Sales and Marketing Executives and In-house Counsel. This is a Free Seminar Time: 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. Continental breakfast available at 7:30 a.m. To register for this free event, please e-mail kwevents@blgcanada.com or telephone 519.741.9100.
