Waterloo Region Success Story - COM DEV

COM DEV International Ltd., is a global designer and manufacturer of space hardware. As world leaders in the production of space-qualified passive microwave equipment, specialized electronics and optical subsystems they are redefining their area of space engineering technology. Over 1,200 individuals are employed across Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States.

COM DEV manufactures advanced products and subsystems which are sold to major satellite builders for use in communications, space science, and remote sensing. The Company has been in business for 30 years and currently has more than 250 patents granted or pending. COM DEV trades on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol CDV. Their technology is used on more than 800 spacecraft, including 80% of all commercial communications satellites ever launched. The company also supplies scientific instruments and subsystems that play a crucial role in monitoring changes to the Earth’s environment and exploration of the solar system. COM DEV’s key clients include Thales Alenia Space and Astrium in Europe; Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Orbital Sciences and Space Systems/Loral in the USA; the Canadian Space Agency, NASA, the European Space Agency, the Indian Space Research Organization, the Chinese Academy of Space Technology and the Canadian Department of National Defence.

The company is currently organized into four operating divisions:
  • COM DEV International Products (CDIP) is based at the company’s headquarters in Cambridge, Ontario. CDIP’s primary focus is the design and production of spaceflight hardware for the commercial satellite communications market. The division designs and produces COM DEV’s legacy core products: integrated multiplexers, ancillary microwave components, and electromechanical switches.
  • COM DEV USA (CDU) is located in El Segundo, CA and primarily serves the US military space market, with a focus on complex microwave filtering and specialized electromechanical switches. COM DEV’s acquisition of the passive microwave devices product line from L-3 Communications has been integrated into CDU.
  • COM DEV Canada (CDC) is located in Ottawa, Ontario and is primarily focused on the Canadian civil space market; this division specializes in spaceflight subsystems and instruments used in earth observation, space science and remote sensing. Technologies range from rf electronics to optical.
  • COM DEV Europe (CDE) is located in Aylesbury, UK and for over twenty years has focused on European Space Agency activities and technology development. Key technologies have been provided for major European space programs in the communications and remote sensing areas.
In 2010, COM DEV was named among the top 15 employers in Waterloo Region. Companies were ranked based upon company policies including maternity leave top up benefits, RSP plan contribution matching, subsidized tuition, employee referral bonuses and share purchase plan.

"A spacecraft and all its components must withstand the extremes of vibration, pyrotechnic shock, cosmic radiation and large temperature fluctuations. There are no service calls, no repairs, and no replacement parts once a spacecraft is launched – and therefore, there is no tolerance for anything less than perfection. "

“Applications of satellite technology continue to be developed at a fast rate, which create opportunities for leading space equipment manufacturers such as ourselves. We have a tremendous track record of over thirty years of supplying equipment with excellent quality and reliability to a ‘who’s who’ in spacecraft manufacturing and space mission operations around the world” - Michael Pley - Chief Executive Officer
