Waterloo Region Success Story - Karos Health

Karos Health operates on the belief that every person has the right to quality health care. By developing software products that are designed to increase collaboration, their tools provide support for the exchange and storage of health information across enterprises and communities around the world. In addition, these tools help to foster collaboration between health care providers and patients. With over 20 years experience in the healthcare information technology field, they are innovative and dedicated to improving healthcare and effectively the quality of patient care.

“Our vision is focused on building products that improve collaboration between health professionals and the patients they are providing care to.” emphasized Mr. Pawlicz. One of the key ways they are achieving this is by reducing the complexity of integration of healthcare records data integration, by simplifying deployment while providing maximum privacy and security. Offering products and services helps healthcare vendors to provide standards-based integrated interoperable solutions.

Offering the right solutions is one thing, but having the right people in place to do so makes the result a positive one. “The people at Karos are from this area and many have a history working for a number of highly successful companies such as Mitra Imaging and Agfa HealthCare,” stated Mr. Pawlicz. “In addition, Waterloo Region provides fertile ground for talent both from colleges in the area and the University of Waterloo to grow business in the Applied Health Informatics space.”

The world is changing and people want information quickly, safely and accurately. “Healthcare providers want to have access to patients’ complete medical histories to be able to provide better care. Our technology – Rialto – is a platform that allows for the exchange and storage of any clinical information between healthcare providers.” stated Mr. Pawlicz. “Ideally, any patient would like to provide their physician with access to their medical history wherever they go.”

The company has grown in the years since it has been in the Accelerator Centre in Waterloo. 15 full time employees with a combination in healthcare information technology backgrounds, as well as backgrounds in computer science and mathematics make up the staff. “What we try to foster within the company/culture is that we are transparent and open. We are very focused on building the right products to ultimately provide better care to patients. The goal is to focus on solving interoperability problems across healthcare enterprises so that healthcare leverages the power of IT to improve the quality of patient care,” commented Mr. Pawlicz.

Being in the Region was a natural fit for the Karos Health team, especially when they received the opportunity to become one of the companies within the Accelerator Centre. “The Accelerator Centre incubator centre for new business has tied us into the local community through UW and other businesses working within the world-class facility. This has helped us tremendously to grow our business, raise awareness about our company and be embedded in the community.”

With the goal of becoming a world leader in its field, Karos Health is aware that collaboration is a key part of their success. “We believe in fact that we cannot be everything ourselves. We work with technology partners and channel partners to build and deliver our products globally creating an ecosystem for new approaches to solve healthcare interoperability problems in novel ways.”

Significant commercial success has been achieved in projects throughout Canada and the USA, most recently in Ontario and the establishment of a Karos Innovation Center with the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Department of Radiology.
