Waterloo Region Success Story - MedManager

Launched in 2002, MedManager Interactive Corporation came onto the health informatics scene with the visionary goal of offering people living with chronic disease improved access to healthcare education, professionals, and services via their internet designs. As Canada’s leading provider of chronic disease management solutions, MedManager enables people living with chronic disease and healthcare professionals, to connect via online portals and work collaboratively to achieve healthy living goals.

As Canada’s population ages and grows, results matter in the healthcare field, and MedManager delivers. The diabetes management portal provided by MedManager has proven to help improve the health outcomes and satisfaction of people with chronic disease and to increase the operational efficiency of healthcare organizations. The result is enhanced care and wellness, for more people.

Michael Cowan, President & CEO of MedManager, stressed the importance of advancement in information technology opportunities in Canada. “The healthcare system is not equipped to deal with the burden of chronic disease.” Cowan noted that the unfortunate increase in cases of diabetes threatens to continue overwhelming our healthcare resources. “Technology and innovation really will be relied upon to help reduce the burdens,” said Mr. Cowan. “Our goal is to be another Waterloo Region success story to aid in the health of people locally and around the world.”

MedManager’s team of talented software engineers and developers can customize the unique flagship online chronic disease management program or create bespoke solutions to suit the specific needs of any healthcare organization and clientele. Mr. Cowan knows the advantages firsthand of being located among world class post secondary institutions in Waterloo Region. “We utilize graduates from the University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University and Conestoga College.” Mr. Cowan continued, “The Region’s post secondary institutions are instrumental in developing our programs.”

Sharing in the spirit of cooperation that defines Waterloo Region, MedManager values their partnerships and partners. Working in collaboration with research groups, eHealth, medical device vendors, and healthcare organizations enhances their efforts to develop and deliver the solutions healthcare providers and their clients require for optimal chronic disease management.

As a leader in its field, MedManager has accomplished some impressive “firsts” in Canada:
  • The first Canadian company to have a randomized controlled trial involving its diabetes management system published in the Canadian Journal of Diabetes
  • The first “patient portal” vendor in Canada to attain the ISO 13485 certification for its quality management system
  • The first “patient portal” in Canada to receive a Class 2 medical device licence from Health Canada
Ever the pioneer, MedManager is now leveraging its technology and expertise to bring a new diabetes wellness service to market. Live Well Coaching™, launched in November 2010, offers people living with diabetes or at risk for diabetes the support of a team of nurses, dietitians and kinesiologists to achieve their healthy living goals. Clients of Live Well Coaching interact with their coaches over the phone and, of course, via MedManager’s health management portal. “The combination of healthcare technology and expertise is the key to better future health outcomes,” proclaims Cowan.

MedManager is a privately-held company headquartered in Kitchener, Ontario, in Canada’s Technology Triangle. Close proximity to the world-renowned University of Waterloo’s School of Computer Science and Health Sciences Campus, and Conestoga College’s Health Informatics program gives them access to the best new ideas in eHealth.

“Technology and innovation really will be relied upon to help reduce the burdens. Our goal is to be another Waterloo Region success story to aid in the health of people locally and around the world.”
