 OpenText - Waterloo Region Success Story

OpenText is a Canadian success story, a company that evolved from a University of Waterloo project into the country’s largest software company and one of the world’s leading Enterprise Content Management (ECM) companies. Headquartered in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, OpenText reported revenues of US $912 million in fiscal 2010 and employs approximately 4,500 people globally.

The core of OpenText’s business is ECM software that helps companies manage, store, access, and share information assets – content that is critical to any enterprise. An estimated 100 million users in many of the world’s largest corporations and government agencies across 114 countries use OpenText software.

OpenText’s 20 years of success has been built on recognizing market trends and customer needs. Key areas of focus for OpenText today include: social networking software that is secure and robust enough for use behind corporate firewalls; mobile solutions to ensure that OpenText content can be accessed everywhere; and advanced content analytics technology to improve search and Web user experience.

OpenText was the first company to provide secure social networking collaboration for world leaders at the Toronto and Korea G-20 Summits held in 2010. The company is extending its mobile platform for use on Apple’s iPad and RIM’s BlackBerry. And with the acquisition of Nstein Technologies in 2010, OpenText is able to offer advanced content analytics solutions that will incorporate leading-edge innovations from Canada’s National Research Council (NRC).

The company partners with other major tech leaders to enable joint solutions that benefit customers. Working with Microsoft Corporation, OpenText customers can take advantage of SharePoint solutions and other Microsoft business systems optimized for OpenText software applications. OpenText recently acquired Business Process Management (BPM) company Metastorm which will add complementary services to enhance OpenText’s Microsoft Solutions Portfolio. Other key industry partners include SAP and Oracle.

OpenText’s Executive Chairman and Chief Strategy Officer Tom Jenkins is a forward-thinking visionary whose insights have been captured his latest book “Managing Content in The Cloud”. Mr. Jenkins is participating in a global tour this year, meeting with CIOs of companies around the world to share his perspective on meeting the increasing demands for content management and compliance. His book includes over 50 examples of customer implementations which help organizations globally boost productivity, achieve compliance and profit from their content. Mr. Jenkins also plays a key role in advancing digital media innovation in Canada, as a proponent of the annual Canada 3.0 digital media forum.

OpenText’s visionary progress has been rewarded with recognition from various sources:

  • In September 2010, OpenText was positioned by analyst firm Gartner Inc. in the “Leaders” quadrant of the “Magic Quadrant for Web Content Management” based on an evaluation of the company’s ability to execute and its completeness of vision;
  • In June, 2010 OpenText was chosen by the editors of Canada’s Top 100 Employers as one of Canada’s Top Employers for Young People;
  • In 2009, the company earned a spot on Fortune’s List of the 100 Fastest-Growing Companies, ranking 15th overall and 6th on the list’s breakdown of fastest-growing tech companies.

On January 24, 2011 OpenText CEO John Shackleton rang the opening bell at New York’s NASDAQ exchange, celebrating OpenText’s 15-year trading anniversary. The company also celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, marking two decades of success and advancement. Looking to the future, OpenText strives to continue its industry leadership trajectory and its unwavering contribution to growing Canada’s high-tech competitiveness in an increasingly digital world.

“OpenText’s commitment to Waterloo Region is evident in our expansion project being completed by summer 2011 that adds a second building, more than doubling our capacity at our headquarters location. The synergies at our doorstep are amazing, with education facilities including the University of Waterloo, other established tech companies, 200 plus start-ups, and great tech associations all located here.” - Tom Jenkins, Executive Chairman and Chief Strategy Officer, OpenText
