Bringing businesses together to cultivate success in Downtown Kitchener
The Synergy Centre, a redevelopment project by Ridgewood Holdings Inc. is strategically situated in the heart of Downtown Kitchener. The award-winning King Street is Kitchener’s “sustainable streetscape”, and is quickly becoming a centre of transformation and rejuvenation in Waterloo Region. The Synergy Centre offers upscale office space with tall ceilings and massive windows and two event spaces all within minutes of University of Waterloo’s School of Pharmacy, Wilfrid Laurier University’s School of Social Work, City Hall, Kaufman Lofts and numerous high profile companies and organizations including Google, Desire2Learn, Manulife and Communitech.
The Synergy Centre at 260 King St. W., is one of the area’s newer development projects. This location was formerly the home of Famous Players Cinema (until 2004) and before that, The Century Theatre (1928 – 1961). Despite the location’s shift in business ventures, the cinematic theme still abounds in its tenancy… coming attractions are now tourist attractions (Waterloo Region Tourism Corporation), foreign films have been replaced with foreign direct investments (Canada’s Technology Triangle), and the snack bar with a collaborative/shared workspace (Treehaus). Original light fixtures, glass panels, doors and stairs from the buildings previous life offer a theatrical atmosphere. Projection rooms are now board rooms, theatres have been converted into open concept offices and lobbies have been adapted into… lobbies.
President of Ridgewood Holdings Inc. Bernie Nimer has been investing and participating in downtown Kitchener development projects for over 25 years. Says Bernie, “I’ve watched it transition from a vibrant city core to being devastated by big box urban development and sprawl but have enjoyed being a part of the rebirth and rebranding of the City’s downtown. I’m committed because the City of Kitchener and the BIA are also committed to revitalizing the Downtown. I imagine Kitchener as a booming metropolis in the next decade with an influx of people living, working and playing in the core”.
Ridgewood Holdings Inc. is involved in several other development projects in downtown Kitchener, including an exciting 8-unit urban live/work development at 59 Weber St. E. (next to new Courthouse) and the Mayfair Hotel redevelopment project. Regarding the potential of downtown Kitchener, Bernie says, “The potential is no longer potential. The time has arrived, we’re here. Now it’s a process of aligning like-minded groups and individuals and putting the pieces together.”
