Skills Canada: connecting students to the world of skilled trades

In November, 2009, I was invited to participate in a Business Mission to explore the many renewable energy initiatives practiced in Germany. This trip organized by Canada’s Technology Triangle Inc, was promoted as an opportunity for business leaders from the Waterloo Region to promote Ontario’s Green Energy Act (GEA) and North America’s first comprehensive Feed-in-Tariff (FIT). It truly was an experience of a life time and one I won’t soon forget. During my trip to Germany, I had discussions with the Chamber of Commerce, the Canadian Consulate and local businesses about the possibility of Ontario students interning in Germany to learn more about renewable energy sources. June 3, 2010 - Lambda Alpha International Familiarization Tour
Lambda Alpha International (LAI) is an honorary society for the advancement of land economics. The society provides a forum for the study and advancement of land economics. It is also a forum for key city development firms and organizations to network. In June, CTT Inc will host the Simcoe Chapter of LAI in a day long field trip to see the UW Research Park, the Perimeter Institute, an Intelligent Seniors Living Campus, Brownfield sites and more. February 2, 2010 – Point of View with John Jung: Future Proofing Waterloo Region
CEO, John Jung, explored what makes global cities successful and suggested key actions that institutions, businesses and government leaders in Waterloo Region should undertake to help “future-proof” our communities. John is also the Chairman and co-Founder of the Intelligent Community Forum (ICF), head quartered in New York City that has been studying and promoting best practices towards creating better and more intelligent communities. Accordingly, John discussed the steps that he sees Waterloo Region should be pursuing based on ICF’s experiences with nearly 100 international cities. January 27, 2010 – Visit of the G8 Journalists to Waterloo Region for an Advance Familiarization Visit

Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade’s G8 Summit Management Office invited some senior journalists from G8 countries to an “advance” familiarization visit to Toronto, Muskoka and Waterloo Region. Most of the journalists came from business and technology sectors. They were in our region for a full day on January 27, 2010. Journalists from France, Germany, Japan, Italy, Russia, U.K. and the U.S.A. were among those in attendance. The day started with a tour and visit to RIM followed by lunch at Conestoga College School of Business and Hospitality. The afternoon program consisted of a driving tour of the UW Research & Technology Park and presentations from the University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University and Conestoga College to highlight research, innovation and entrepreneurship in the Waterloo Region.
