Digital media and mobile applications have found fertile ground in Waterloo Region.
The new Communitech HUB (http://www.communitechhub.ca/), a 30,000 square foot “sandbox” located at The Tannery District (http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Tannery-District/93856715312) opened in October 2010 and has quickly become the place to be for all things digital.

Supported by Conestoga College, Wilfrid Laurier University, University of Waterloo, Agfa Healthcare, Research In Motion, Christie Digital, Desire2Learn, Open Text, City of Kitchener, Province of Ontario and Networks Centres of Excellence, the HUB provides incubator space combined with access to professional services, an Executive Briefing Centre with video conferencing, theatre / event space and a the H.I.V.E. – Hub Interactive Virtual Environment.

The HUB along with the Accelerator Centre at the David Johnston Research & Technology Park, and the leadership of Communitech have helped to spawn more than 200 early stage startups.

There has been $84 million in deal flow with 30,000 tech professionals working in over 700 companies in the last 12 months.

Companies range from multinational home grown Research In Motion, Open Text, Christie Digital to expanding multinationals such as IBM, Google, Electronic Arts, McAfee, Intel, Sony, Sybase / SAP.

Investment attraction comes in the form of M&A’s, takeovers and new Greenfield investment. Availability of talent, opportunities for R&D collaboration, innovation and a great lifestyle are cited as key values in this ecosystem that drives continued investment.

Canada’s Technology Triangle will be joining with other Ontario Tech Corridor communities from Ottawa, Toronto, Niagara and London from Feb 28th – March 4th in Los Angeles and Silicon Valley to meet companies and make the case for investment in Ontario and our regions. The group will also attend the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.
