Agri – Food Processing Cluster Initiative
Information provided by Luis Garcia, Chair Institute of Food Processing Technology and Bill Elliot, Vice President of Business Development, CTT.
In the fall of 2009, CTT partnered with the Toronto Region Research Alliance, Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance and the City of Guelph to launch a cluster initiative in the Toronto-Guelph and Waterloo Region Corridor. The initiative is to be used as a platform for establishing and marketing the corridor as the North American centre for agri-food innovation, R&D, entrepreneurship and economic development.
Background information that led to this initiative included:
- The food manufacturing industry in Canada is now the largest employer in the manufacturing sector.
- In November 2009, Statistics Canada reported there were 222,300 employees in food manufacturing, compared with 159,100 in transportation equipment.
- Since June 2009, the number of employees in food manufacturing has risen, while overall manufacturing jobs have dropped.
The corridor initiated a study which looked at the existing cluster and structure in the Corridor and compared it with major US and European known Food Clusters. Results included:
- 3rd largest food cluster in North America
- 618 (82%) of 752 Ontario companies are located in the Corridor
- 5,189 employed in food related university & college programs (2007)
- 519 research experts from universities, funding councils and other institutes in the Corridor
- 132 research institutes, networks, associations and councils in the Corridor
Our progress has allowed us to develop an Asset Map and be able to assess cluster activity in North America, understand established clusters in the EU and how they work, as well as initiaite and receive responses from an Industry Survey in regard to cluster formation.
The Corridor has many attributes which position the region to formalize and market a successful cluster, including:
- Training and education
- High quality research
- Available research funds
- Available labour force
- A significant private sector presence
Moving forward we are looking to establish strategy, governance, planning and funding for the Food corridor.
About Conestoga College’s Institute of Food Processing Technology
Locally, the Institute of Food Processing Technology (IFPT) was created as a result of a partnership between the Alliance of Ontario Food Processors and Conestoga College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning. With a mission to “develop a highly skilled workforce by providing education and training programs that meet the needs of the food and beverage manufacturing industry”, the IFPT will address the shortage of skilled workers and offer training in areas such as mechanical/electronic instrumentation techniques, robotics/automation, food safety and plant supervision. The Process Operator – Food Manufacturing Apprenticeship Program is the first to be launched by the IFPT with training beginning in October 2010.
Registration is now open for the first course “Food Safety (Apprenticeship Level 1)”.
