Roundtable with Ryan Baerg, Consul & Senior Trade Commissioner at the Canadian Consulate in Chongqing, China
On March 23, CTT was pleased to welcome Ryan Baerg, Consul & Senior Trade Commissioner at the Canadian Consulate in Chongqing, China to a roundtable discussion on economic development and doing business in China, specifically in the area of Chongqing.
With a GDP growth of nearly 17% and a population increase of over half a million annually, it’s no wonder that Chonqing is quickly becoming known as ‘The biggest city in the world’. As the largest inland city in China, Chongqing represents the ‘next wave’ of economic development. Over recent years, the area has seen a wealth of multinational investment from companies like Ford, BASF, and most recently, HP.
To support this increase in population and investment, the city is focused on urban development and infrastructure, with an eye towards issues such as value chain, R&D, environmental sensitivities, and smart growth. Additionally, business operating costs are still much lower in this area than other, more developed areas of China such as Shanghai and Beijing. Ryan’s insight into Chongqing was timely given CTT’s Business Mission to China this May 10 - 20.
Of his visit to Waterloo, Mr. Baerg said, “It’s surprising and welcoming to present to a group of whom most I’ve met virtually.”
