Waterloo Region: Accelerating Canada’s Digital Economy

by Avvey Peters, Vice President, Operations, Communitech

Already well-known as Canada’s fastest-growing tech cluster, Waterloo Region is developing serious critical mass as a digital media cluster as well. Worldwide, the digital media sector is one of the fastest-growing segments of the knowledge economy.

PricewaterhouseCoopers estimates the global market will reach US $2.2 trillion within the next five years.

Waterloo Region is taking advantage of this global opportunity at a regional, provincial, and national level. Part of the strategy has been to build the Communitech Hub in the heart of the Region – a 30,000 square foot facility to facilitate collaboration on digital media tools and applications....[Read More]

From Europe to Canada – Update on CTT’s Investment Mission at the Husum Wind Energy Show

By Catharine Gerhard, Business Development Officer, CTT and Ingo Koenig, Managing Partner, Koenig & Consultants Inc.

CTT led its investment business-to-business mission to Husum Wind Energy 2010 in Husum, Germany this past September to attract European wind power companies and suppliers to invest in Ontario. The conference, known as the birthplace of the global wind energy industry, has been hosting the “who’s who” of the global wind power industry for the past 20 years. This year was incredibly successful, attracting 34,000+ visitors to the more than 900 exhibitors at the show.

We met with approximately 35 prequalified companies including wind turbine manufacturers, inverter companies, blade manufacturers, operations and maintenance companies, developers and logistics companies. The mission was a success as we were able to secure meetings with decision makers for real investment opportunities. Solving the investors’ pain of finding the “right” suppliers was CTT’s approach to securing these meetings. In order to be eligible for the Green Energy Act’s feed-in tariffs at $0.13 (onshore) and $0.19 (offshore), the Ontario Green Energy Act requires new investments to have a minimum of 25% domestic content. This domestic content is slated to rise to 50% on January 1, 2012.

The CTT Husum mission provided the chance for mission participants to hit the ground running. Craig Maw, General Manager, and Darryl King, President, of Logikor were mission participants and appreciated the networking opportunities the show provided. “Husum was a successful mission that allowed us to target specific manufacturers and make key contacts within the wind industry” said Mr King. “Taking part in the CTT Husum mission facilitated growth of our Special Commodities division in wind logistics both overseas and in the ever expanding Ontario market.”

CTT’s value proposition is a strategic central location in Ontario with excellent transportation infrastructure supported by a strong manufacturing supply base and workforce.

Next Steps: At CanWEA’s Annual Conference in Montreal, November 1-3rd, Waterloo Region secured interest by several wind turbine OEMs to visit Waterloo Region in Q1 2011 for meetings with potential suppliers. Stay tuned through the Manufacturing Innovation Network (MIN) for more information on this exciting opportunity.
