Wind Energy
Canada’s Supply Chain Corridor
Located close to major wind energy sites along the windy shorelines of the Great Lakes, on both sides of the Canada-US border and major population centres, the Waterloo Region is a key supplier of components. Evidence shows we have a substantial home market for wind farms.
- Ontario’s installed wind energy capacity in 2009 was 1208 MW.
- The Ontario government plans to retire 7,000 MW of coal fired generation by 2014.
- The Ontario Power Authority (OPA) has a target of 4,600 MW of wind energy by 2020.
- The Green Energy and Green Economy Act, passed in 2009, makes Ontario a global renewable energy leader with an attractive Feed-in Tariff Program that guarantees rates between 13.5 and 19.0 cents/kWh.
“Just in terms of scale and focus on computer science, Waterloo stands out . There are many years when Waterloo is the university that has the most people (at Microsoft) of any university in the world .”
